SCIENCE PRIZE

At the 12th Annual Meeting of the German Society of Nephrology - from October 1 to 4, 2020 - Professor Morath was awarded the Nils Alwall Prize for outstanding research in his scientific focus areas of transplantation medicine and acute kidney failure.

Nils Alwall was a Swedish professor and pioneer of hemodialysis who died in 1986 at the age of 81. He had developed an artificial kidney in the early 1940s and treated a patient with this artificial kidney for the first time in 1946 at the University of Lund in Sweden. In addition to eliminating urinary substances, his artificial kidney was also suitable for removing water by ultrafiltration, which was initially achieved by overpressure in the cellophane tubes and later by negative pressure on the irrigation side. Nils Alwall was not only the first to perform targeted ultrafiltration, he was also the first physician to use dialysis to treat exogenous intoxication. He was a leader in the field of ultrafiltration and hemofiltration.
