As an acute specialist hospital for kidney diseases, the Heidelberg Kidney Center offers a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic services. Including part-time staff, around 180 employees care for around 1,700 inpatients and around 8,000 outpatients every year. In order to ensure that patients receive high-quality care in the long term, we constantly train our staff both internally and externally and immediately implement the latest developments in treatment.
Professor Martin Zeier has been the Medical Director of the Heidelberg Kidney Center since April 2003.
Under his leadership, a chronic haemodialysis program, a peritoneal dialysis program, a bed ward and a supraregional outpatient renal clinic were established.
In 2005, operations began in our newly built hospital. We have a modern, functional hospital that is geared towards the optimal treatment of our patients. The close connection to the Medical Clinic ensures an efficient infrastructure for patient care.
In cooperation with the Surgical University Clinic, a total of over 2000 kidney transplants have been carried out to date.
The Heidelberg Kidney Center has gained an international reputation for its work in the fields of kidney transplantation, peritoneal dialysis, acute kidney failure, diabetic nephropathy and the role of the kidney in the development of hypertension.
Since 1976, the Centre has organized the annual Heidelberg Seminar for Renal and Hypertensive Diseases, which is attended by 800 German and foreign nephrologists to provide information on current problems in clinical nephrology.
Through intensive research activities within our specialist field, we significantly improve the life expectancy and quality of life of patients with chronic kidney disease. Only the close integration of research and practice enables the further development of state-of-the-art medical treatment procedures. The treatment plans of our acute specialist hospital for kidney diseases are therefore based on a broad spectrum of diagnostics and therapy. We work intensively to improve the quality of life of our patients.
