World Hypertension Day was launched with the aim of creating broad awareness of the dangers of hypertension (high blood pressure) and educating the public about the prevention, early detection and treatment of high blood pressure. And with good reason, because according to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 1.5 billion people worldwide suffer from high blood pressure and this disease causes up to 10 million (preventable) deaths every year.
In order to address the very different aspects that need to be considered, the World Hypertension League organizes its day of action every year under a different theme. These are intended as a guide for the member associations and can be customized at national level. This year's motto is: "Measure Your Blood Pressure", loosely translated as "Don't forget to measure your blood pressure". Or, in the social media #mybloodpressurefits
In its inaugural year - 2005 - the day of action took place on May 14. Since 2006, it has traditionally been celebrated on May 17. Due to the developments of the COVID 19 pandemic, the day was moved to October 17 in 2019. This year, it is listed in the German High Pressure League's yearbook of important dates on June 19. This is a little confusing. According to Professor Martin Zeier, it would be best for all of us if we paid more attention to our blood pressure not just on one day of the year, but throughout the year.
That's why the Head of Nephrology has joined forces with the renal physicians in his team - Senior Physician Dr. Jörg Beimler and Dr. Sarah Khan Blouki - has brought in reinforcements from the cardiology department at Heidelberg University Hospital in the form of head physician Prof. Norbert Frey, senior physician Prof. Christian Erbel and private lecturer Dr. Nicolas Geis, in order to put the topic "through its paces".
On June 19, we will be presenting the video podcast recorded for you on May 14 and hope that your blood pressure is correct or can be corrected very quickly. Medically correct blood pressure measurements are taken in our outpatient clinic every Tuesday and Thursday from 13:00 to 13:30. Why not make an appointment now?
