Infections in immunocompromised patients
AG Sommerer
Bacterial, mycotic (e.g. Aspergillus, Candida species, Pneumocystis jirovecii) and especially viral infections (e.g. cytomegalovirus (CMV), polyomavirus (BKV), human papilloma virus (HPV)) are frequent complications after kidney transplantation, which can be associated with further clinical consequences.
In addition to an increased rejection rate and premature graft loss, an association with the development of diabetes mellitus and an increase in the cardiovascular risk profile has been observed for CMV viremia, for example.
In clinical-translational projects, clinical factors and biomarkers that support the development of infectious complications are analyzed and the importance of prophylactic measures (drug prophylaxis, vaccinations) is evaluated.
