Waiting lists Information on the corona vaccination
Organ transplant patients and patients on waiting lists
Dear patients,
In the past few days, we have received numerous inquiries from organ transplant patients regarding vaccination against COVID-19. With this information, we would like to provide you with the most important facts and recommendations.
In the Coronavirus Vaccination Ordinance of 08.02.21, the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG) has drawn up an order for the vaccination of particularly vulnerable population groups. This ordinance is based on the recommendations of the Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO). According to this, organ transplant patients belong to the second priority group ("high priority"). Although patients on the waiting list for an organ transplant are not explicitly mentioned in the vaccination ordinance, they should be vaccinated in line with international recommendations in the same way as "high priority" organ transplant patients. So far, the vaccines from BioNTech/Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca have been approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA). Further vaccines are expected to be approved in the course of the year.
Vaccination data from several 100,000 patients worldwide has already been analyzed, meaning that there is a good body of data on the efficacy and safety of the vaccines. No patients after organ transplantation have taken part in the clinical studies published to date. The recommendations for patients after organ transplantation are therefore primarily based on our extensive experience with already established vaccinations (e.g. the flu vaccination). Therefore, in view of the risks of severe COVID-19 disease and the positive experience with other vaccinations (e.g. flu vaccination), we expressly recommend a COVID-19 vaccination for all transplant recipients and patients on the waiting list! It currently applies to every vaccine approved in Germany.
To arrange a vaccination appointment, all patients must register at their local vaccination center. Should there be any changes to this procedure, we will inform you immediately.
In addition to personal identification documents, you will need a certificate of transplantation or your listing for an organ transplant.
This can be requested from your family doctor, a specialist in private practice or directly from the transplant center.
If you do not have the relevant proof of your transplant or your listing at the Heidelberg Transplant Center or if you have any other questions, please contact the transplant outpatient clinic responsible for you.
