VENI, VIDI, DIVI - Prize in second installment

As the association for German emergency and intensive care medicine, this year's DIVI congress once again crowns the success of new scientific achievements. Previously, the best four abstracts were submitted each year as the best achievement.

But competition is growing: the congress now awards eight prizes.

Once again, a doctor who already received the national research prize in 2020 will be crowned with a DIVI prize in 2021. Dr. Christian Nusshag, Senior Physician for Internal Medicine, Nephrology, Intensive Care Medicine, Organ Replacement Therapy and Transplant Medicine.

The NZH research team brought new findings from experimental research. With the help of a new prognostic biomarker, the soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR), the team was able to detect and diagnose AKI, a kidney disease caused by sepsis that was previously difficult to predict.

"We found that this marker indicates very early on whether the therapy is working. The question of whether a patient needs dialysis or not can therefore be answered at an early stage," explained Dr. Nußhag.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is characterized by a spontaneous decline in kidney function. The causes are very complex and multifactorial in nature. As a solution, Dr. Nusshag, together with his team, implemented innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to significantly improve AKI management in the future.

At the congress, under the motto "Together! Meet. Discuss. Shape" was hosted this year by Prof. Dr. med. Hans-Jörg Busch. The program consisted of various scientific lectures, training courses and campfire sessions. "For all those working in intensive care and emergency medicine, the day-to-day challenges are already extensive and complex. Unfortunately, 22 months of pandemic management was and still is the greatest challenge in the history of intensive care and emergency medicine in Germany and worldwide!" said Prof. Busch "You have all done an incredible job and made a key contribution to overcoming the pandemic - on behalf of the DIVI, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart!"
