On the occasion of Organ Donation Day on June 1, 2024

Today, as well as before and after, the topic of organ donation in Germany is as topical as it is controversial. Together with Rhein-Neckar-Fernsehen (RNF) and moving images from our clinic, we at the Kidney Center of Heidelberg University Hospital would like to draw attention to the explosive nature of the decision to release one's own organs postmortem for organ transplantation. In Germany, around 9,000 people are currently waiting for an organ, the RNF report"Three stories from the Rhine-Neckar region", which links the topic of organ donation.

We would like to see this as food for thought so that more people decide to register in the organ donation register. The register for declarations on organ and tissue donation (organ donation register) is a central electronic directory in which the decision for or against organ and tissue donation can be recorded. Registration is voluntary and free of charge. It can be changed or revoked at any time.

Everyone should decide during their lifetime how they feel about organ donation. An explicit announcement of this very individual decision would have far-reaching consequences for society as a whole and give people on the waiting list hope again.
